Ho un processore a 64 bit...ho installato la feisty a 64 bit...e volevo abilitare il 3D

ho una scheda video nvdia 6200, su 32 bit ho seguito questa guida:

Driver per scheda video nvidia

Per prima cosa bisogna verificare se la vostra scheda nvidia è supportata, quindi controllare nel seguente link se la vostra scheda video risulta:

Controllo sito nvidia

prossimo passo invece consiste nello scaricare il driver della scheda video (per la vostra architettura, se avete AMD64 ci sono dei driver appositi) al sito dell'nvidia (MI RACCOMANDO COPIATE I DRIVER NELLA VOSTRA HOME, eg. /home/vostronome):

ora bisogna installare una serie di pacchetti, dare il seguente comando:

sudo apt-get install build-essential gcc gcc-4.0 xserver-xorg-dev

nel caso non l'avete fatto, bisogna settare una password per l'utente root:

sudo passwd root

inserire due volte la nuova password (mi raccomando di non inserire una password troppo banale!!) e dovrebbe uscirvi un messaggio del tipo:

passwd: password updated successfully

ora bisogna digitare il comando:

uname -r

e segnatevi su un foglio (cartaceo o elettronico) la stringa (eg. 2.6.12-10-386) e dare il comando:

sudo apt-get install linux-image-xxx linux-headers-xxx

dove xxx è la stringa che avete letto con il comando precedente! ora invece bisogna digitare i seguenti comandi:

sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx nvidia-settings nvidia-kernel-common
sudo rm /etc/init.d/nvidia-*
sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`

questo per cancellare ogni residuo di vecchi driver nvidia.
Ora bisogna che le prossime istruzioni ve le scrivete su un foglio di carta perchè bisogna abbandonare l'ambiente grafico, premendo CTRL-ALT-F1 passerete all'interfaccia testuale, a questo punto fate il login e digitate:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

o kdm se usate kde, ora bisogna dare questa serie di comandi:

cd /home/vostronome/
su [invio] CC=gcc-4.1 [invio]
export CC [invio]
exit [invio]
CC=gcc-4.1 [invio]
export CC[invio]

ora bisogna digitare il comando per installare i driver:

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run

molto probabilmente il nome del file non sarà proprio quello, per riuscire a identificarlo digitare sudo sh NVIDIA e poi spingete il tasto tab, in automatico dovrebbe trovarvi il file; alle domande dell'installer rispondete sempre sì, ora è il momento di ritornare all'ambiente grafico, digitate:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

Ora i driver sono installati!

solo che non funziona
avvio ubuntu e c'è schermata nera (nessun errore...schermata nera piantato...non mi fa neanche accedere alla consolle...

eh la prima guida è quella che ho seguito io e non ha funzionato praticamente

la seconda...mi era parso di capire che era meglio installare i driver dell'nvidia che quelli di ubuntu o no?

insomma ho provato ad installare quelli dea apt (nvidia-glx etc...)
parte...ma se do glxgears mi da degl errori

inoltre siccome volevo darmi al video editing e al 3D
volevo installarli a mano

ma non funzionano :S
li installo come c'è scritto nella guida
però poi il server X non parte

usa envy, è la soluzione più semplice e sicura

niente da fare...

ho scaricato envy...doppio click
installa driver Nvidia
ha fatto tutto quello che doveva fare...ho riavviato linux

all'avvio quando prova ad avviare X ha sfarfallato un po' con tty1...poi ha detto impossibile avviare il server grafico X

ho provato anche quello ma con scarsi risultati...come ho scritto in quel thread ma non ho ricevuto risposta

su edgy versione i386 avevo installato il 3D senza problemi
con feisty versione amd proprio non ci riesco

Dando un'occhiata alla prima guida del primo link postato da Janvitus, mi sembra che tu debba installare i driver legacy
quindi non nvidia-glx,

comunque a questo punto dopo varie installazioni con metodi diversi, immagino il tuo xorg.conf sia non proprio pulitissimo.
Prima di ritentare qualsiasi altra installazione, assicurati di disinstallare ciò che avevi installato prima (e che non aveva funzionato) e se ancora non riesci ad entrare in modalità grafica, da terminale prova con un

che avvio ubuntu
carica tutto...quando arriva alla fine x caricare X
tutto nero...tutto bloccato...non riesco neanche ad anadre nelle varie tty1...non funziona nulla insomma, si blocca tutto

Magari envy ha fatto qualcosa che non doveva fare, può capitare, prova senza di lui, anzi disinstallalo completamente insieme ai driver nvidia e installa il deb dai repository.
