Errore demone GNOME successivo a login

Salve a tutti e Buon Anno. Sono nuovo di questo forum e nuovo anche di Linux per cui vi chiedo scusa sin da ora nel caso avessi aperto la discussione nella sezione sbagliata e per eventuali imprecisioni nella terminologia usata.
Ho installato ubuntu 8.04 sul mio portatile Toshiba A300-D diversi mesi fa ma solo in questi giorni ho iniziato a smanettarci.
Subito ho riscontrato l'impossibilità di connettermi alla rete ethernet. Il portatile monta un controller ethernet Marvell Yukon 88E8040T di cui ho scoperto si parla molto nei forum dedicati a ubuntu. Sono riuscito a risolvere il problema grazie alle indicazioni fornite da questo 3d:

Dopo l'ultimo comando il controller è stato riconosciuto ed è stato subito possibile connettersi alla rete (senza neanche riavviare): ho quindi colto l'occasione per scaricare da Internet gli oltre 300 aggiornamenti che il
Gestore aggiornamenti mi proponeva. Una volta installati gli aggiornamenti ho scaricato e abilitato i driver per la scheda video ATI Radeon MobilityHD 3470. Infine ho riavviato il sistema e ho effettuato il login, dopodiché
è comparsa una schermata consistente in un rettangolo bianco (grande circa 1/8 dello scermo) su sfondo rosa.
Tale schermata è durata diversi minuti fino a quando non è finalmente comparso il desktop e il rettangolo bianco si è riempito di grigio e di questo messaggio:
Si è verificato un errore durante l'avvio del demone delle impostazioni di GNOME.
Alcuni aspetti come temi, suoni o impostazioni dello sfondo potrebbero non funzionare correttamente.
L'ultimo messaggio di errore è stato:

GNOME tenterà di riavviare il demone delle impostazioni al prossimo accesso.
Ho provato a riavviare ma niente è cambiato. Ho poi disabilitato i driver ATI e riavviato ma ancora... niente da fare.
Qualcuno di voi - esperti di LInux - saprebbe per cortesia dirmi cosa posso fare per risolvere il problema?

PENSO DI AVER RISOLTO...
Nel frattempo ho dato un'occhiata in giro. Possibile che il problema si sia risolto aggiungendo "127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain" in Sistema -> Amministrazione -> Rete -> Host? Qualcuno potrebbe provare a darmi una spiegazione?
L'avvio ora è abbastanza fluido anche se non come prima dell'effettuazione dell'aggiornamento del sistema e dell'installazione dei driver ATI. C'è la possibilità di sapere cosa potrebbe rallentare la fase di avvio?

Possibile che il problema si sia risolto aggiungendo "127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain" in Sistema -> Amministrazione -> Rete -> Host? Qualcuno potrebbe provare a darmi una spiegazione?
puo' darsi, ma non e' detto che sia stata proprio la causa.
C'è la possibilità di sapere cosa potrebbe rallentare la fase di avvio?
prova a postare
leggendo sul forum ho visto che molti hanno problemi con gli aggiornamenti, soprattutto quando riguardano il kernel, c'e' chi evita di fare aggiornamenti "proposed" piu' instabili, leggi questo link, e poi valuta se è il caso di seguirlo:

Le righe sono pressappoco in numero uguali a quelle dell'output che ho postato ieri.
Le righe relative alla scheda Wi-Fi [ 37.*] si sono ridotte e sono cambiate.
Le righe [ 55.100684] groups: 02 01 e [ 593.749051] CPU0 attaching NULL sched-domain. sono scomparse cosiccome le righe [ 593.779891] groups: 03 e [ 674.564996] CPU0 attaching NULL sched-domain.... è un buon segno? Che cosa significano i numeri tra parentesi quadre? Le righe [ 18.*] sembrano pulite ma il problema sembra aver affetto parte delle [ 19.*].
Qui sotto ti inserisco le prime e le ultime righe di /var/log/kern.log. Tra la prima e l'ultima riga intercorrono pochi secondi. Mentre attendo altri tuoi consigli/disposizioni provo ad avviare con il kernel più vecchio.
