Ho appena installato ubuntu 9.04 e ne sono contento. Ho però riscontrato un problema fastidioso. Quando avvio il pc,non appena finisce il bootscreen col logo di ubuntu,spesso GNOME non si avvia,ma esce una schermata che diventa progressivamente sempre più luminosa fino a diventare completamente bianca e costringermi a riavviare di forza. Non riesco a dire con che frequenza ciò accade. A volte devo mi dà questo problema,riavvio e va. Altre volte una volta non basta,mi dà questo problema più e più volte e mi costringe a riavviare molte volte. Ad esempio ieri sono stato una ventina buona di minuti a riavviare. Qualche giorno fa,invece,mi è andata di c**o e si è avviato direttamente. Come se non bastasse,in qualche raro caso,dopo il bootscreen la schermata resta tutta nera e resta accesa la spia della lettura. Ok che il pc lo spengo solo di notte,ma questo problema è quantomeno fastidioso.

Il syslog sembra pulito, mentre nell'xorg.log quelle righe che ho scritto sopra mi sembrano quantomeno sospette.

Ciao,

le cose che ti ho segnalato prima, dalle ricerche che ho fatto, non sembrano essere errori preoccupanti. L'unica cosa "strana" che ho trovato e' che in alcuni siti suggeriscono di provare il portatile senza batteria ma solo con l'alimentazione.
Ti sembrerà assurdo, ma questo e' quello che ho trovato finora.

Adesso devo andare, quando torno provo a cercare meglio.

Il problema si è risolto da solo quando ubuntu ha fatto il check periodico dell'hd all'avvio,ma dopo una settimana il problema si è ripresentato. Non è possibile fare questa procedura manualmente?

Questo sintomo non lo avevo mai letto. Comunque sarebbe meglio sapere che hardware usi (scheda grafica, ecc) e quali drivers. Chi legge potrebbe regolarsi meglio.

Beh,ho un notebook packard bell della serie easynote M (non ricordo il modello preciso) abbastanza vecchio,del 2002-3 che monta un intel pentium 4 da 2.60 ghz,con 512 mb di ram (32 condivisi con la scheda grafica),scheda video inclusa nel chipset intel da 32 mb dedicati + i 32 condivisi con la ram. Più di questo non ricordo.

P.S. Mica esiste un'utility che mi consente di visualizzare dettagliatamente le specifiche del pc (tipo Everest per win,per intenderci)?

Nelle guide della comunità ne trovi molti altri.
Se vuoi un programma con interfaccia puoi usare sysinfo e simili. Molti, come  hwdata, discover, hwinfo, ecc. non li conosco. Ce ne sono diversi nei repositories. Non so quanto siano approfonditi quindi scegli quello che ti soddisfa di più. basta aprire synaptic e scrivere "hardware" o cose simili.

Riguardo al tuo problema, non avendo io un notebook e men che meno schede integrate, prendi quello che segue con le molle.
Mi è capitato di leggere in passato di problemi al monitor nei notebook. A volte era il software ma altre volte era l'hardware. Il tuo risale al 2002 circa, quindi c'è la possibilità che tu debba pulire l'attacco del cavetto monitor al notebook (almeno così ho letto riguardo alcuni problemi video).
Per il resto, si vedrà quando avrai il modello esatto della scheda.

Che sia un problema del monitor lo escludo,perchè si verifica solo all'avvio e mai in altri momenti.
Ciò che dice sysinfo riguardo la scheda video è: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)

beh,in effetti,un'altro problemino ci sarebbe oltre a quello dell'avvio. Il mio pc risulta sempre non avere il supporto python-opengl e non riesco,ad esempio, a giocare alla modalità 3D degli scacchi e compiz non funziona in modo ottimale,molto peggio di come funzionava a parità di hardware,con intrepid. installando il pacchetto python-opengl pensavo che il problema fosse risolto(come è successo anche con python-gtkgle1) ma continua a darmi problemi.

Mi è sorto un dubbio.
Quando cercavo la tua scheda fra quelle supportate per l'accellerazione 3D, ho inserito solo 855. Ma ora mi accorgo che GM viene espressamente specificato nella serie i915. E' quindi possibile che ci sia una differenza tra il supporto dichiarato a i852/855 e la tua 855GM. Sui chip intel ne so poco perché uso ATI : (

Si,ma sia con intrepid sia con hardy l'accelerazione grafica andava benino,ovviamente nei limiti del mio hardware abbastanza limitato (64mb di memoria video sono un pò pochini,ma 32mb di condivisione sono il massimo impostabile). Riuscivo comunque ad attivare senza troppi problemi molti degli effetti di compiz,anche quelli più pesanti. Ora,con pochi effetti attivati,va abbastanza lento (è comunque usabile,ma non regge il paragone con quando usavo hardy). E a volte sono costretto tramite la Compiz-Fusion Icon a ricaricare il window manager perchè spuntano strani bug che mi fanno apparire una specie di cornice attorno alle finestre ed alle barre ed altri malfunzionamenti. Questi problemi non si presentano se uso metacity e non compiz,ma senza trasparenze,ombre ed effettini vari non riesco a stare  >:(

EDIT: Altra cosa che ho notato,quando ad esempio scorro una pagina web o gli elementi di una cartella,l'avanzamento va visibilmente a scatti,non è fluido.

Ultimamente non si possono fare troppi paragoni tra una versione di Ubuntu e l'altra perché ci sono molte differenze nel gestore delle periferiche X Window (X11, xorg e altri nomi).
Per esempio molte schede ATI non possono più usare i drivers ATI su Jaunty (tanto per farti l'esempio più radicale).

Ho appena trovato che, per il 3D e la fluidità di video e applicazioni, il problema è già stato segnalato e ci sarebbe anche una procedura che comprende la 855GM:
3D performance has regressed compared to the Intrepid release, possibly due to major code changes that have resulted from the introduction to the new acceleration and memory management code (UXA, GEM, DRI2). Due to these changes, there seems to be some regressions in the “legacy” DRI acceleration.

Come vedi ci vuole un po' di confidenza con Ubuntu per affrontarla.

Però dice anche che ci sono diverse discussioni sull'argomento e che se cerchi incrociando parole chiave come intel, 855GM, jaunty, risolto, eccetera, potrebbe saltar fuori altro.
