quando cerco di aggiornare l'add/remove applications mi da questo messaggio di errore:

in terminale dai e copia l'errore che ti esce sotto

poi posta anche il contenuto del sources.list dando in terminale poi: sei connesso a internet?
che versione hai installata?

si sono connesso ad internet con alice wireless e ho il 7.04 dovrei aggiornarla in effetti  :-[

feisty non è più supportata per gli aggiornamenti; se vuoi puoi procedere con gli avanzamenti di versione (mi raccomando: di versione in versione senza fare salti)
Se poi hai la /home separata, quindi su partizione dedicata, puoi fare reinstallazione da zero senza perdere i tuoi dati.
Se non ti ricordi come si fa a vedere le partizioni posta il risultato di Ciao

sei pronto per la 9.04 
scarica e masterizza la .iso a bassa velocità e prova da LIVE CD (prova Ubuntu senza installare) se ti riconosce tutte le periferiche

grazie mille dell'aiuto.. a sto punto faccio domani 
quindi se ho capito faccio partire il 9 e dovrebbe scaricarmi gli aggiornamenti e tutto no? e se funzia tutto quanto lo installo!

se ti funziona tutto per il partizionamento io ti consiglio:
/boot da 512 in ext3
/ da 10 GB in ext4
/home in ext4 per tutto il resto dello spazio meno la swap
swap da 1,5 GB

apri GParted da live CD e rendi tutto come spazio non allocato; dopo vai su installa sul desktop e scegli "partizionamento manuale"
e crei le partizioni come indicato mettendo i rispettivi punti di mount.

In pratica ti dovrebbe uscire una cosa tipo questo

no, gli aggiornamenti li puoi scaricare dopo aver installato la 9.04; la prova da LIVE CD non tocca minimamente l'attuale installazione ma serve solo per vedere se funziona tutto
