problema con gcc

Ciao a tutti!
Ho appena installato dapper sul mio notebook!
Ho provato ad installare hyfrogen, una drum machine, ma quando faccio ./configure ottengo il seguente output:
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

Eppure da synaptic vedo che gcc è installato!Però se faccio gcc -v mi dice comando non trovato!
locate bin/gcc non da output, mentre echo $PATH:
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games

Che posso fare?

devi scaricare gcc da synaptic!
oppure da terminale:
sudo apt-get install build-essential

sudo apt-get install --reinstall gcc

Se faccio reinstall gcc mi  impossibile trocare gcc!

Non l'ho cambiato! e poi se in synaptic cerco gcc me lo da installato!
