problemi avvio ubuntu 10.10 64 bit

salve, ho un problema con l'avvio di ubuntu:
all'accensione il sistema parte, dopo la schermata d'avvio viola con la scritta "Ubuntu" e i puntini sotto lo schermo diventa nero a righe bianche e si sente solamente l'audio dell'avvio...
ho pensato che fosse partita la scheda grafica (ATI MObility Radeon HD 3650) e ho provato ad avviare la modalità live dalla iso e qui funziona tutto...
devo reinstallare il tutto?
EDIT:
volevo copiarmi i files in un hard disk esterno; la directory è hard disk/home/utente?
se sì, non me li fa copiare perchè mi dice che non ho il permesso di "lettura"...come fare a copiarli?

non dovrebbe rendersi neccessario reinstallare. Per caso prima di riavviare avevi installato dei driver per la scheda video? Prova ad avviare in recovery mode e scegli di avviare in modalità grafica ridotta, quindi disinstallali.
Per i file da live digita
e recuperali da lì.

allora, forse ho trovato il motivo per cui non si avvia:
sarà dovuto al fatto che ho cancellato per sbaglio i file di configurazione dall'ubuntu tweak?
comunque si, avevo cambiato i driver per la scheda video in quanto ubuntu aveva installato in automatico quelli più vecchi rispetto a quelli che sono ora disponibili..però l'instalalzione era andata a buon fine in quanto al riavvio funzionava a meraviglia.
per avviare in recovery mode devo premere "esc" all'avvio?

per aver cancellato i file di configurazione di ubuntu-tweak non succede niente di ciò, al massimo un avviso all'avvio del programma.
Dalla tua domanda desumo che hai solo ubuntu installato, e quindi non ti compaia il menu di grub. Per vederlo con grub2 devi tenere premuto "shift". "esc" era per grub1
I driver per le schede grafiche non vanno molto daccordo con linux, almeno quelle propietarie.

quindi è meglio se rimetto quelli installati dai driver aggiuntivi?

sì. Purtroppo i produttori di hardware pongono attenzione solo ai driver per winzzoz, e linux (che tra i suoi pregi ha quello di essere molto frammentato, non é un difetto) ci rimette, perché vengono testati in poche distro con poche configurazioni. Quelle nel menu "driver aggiuntivi" hanno tutto, io ti consiglio di tenere quelli, a meno che tu non abbia particolari neccessità.

ho provato a rimuovere il catalyst installato manualmente con il comando

Si potrebbe provare quanto scritto (rimozione forzata), ma é bene seguire l'avvertimento dell'ultima riga.
Ma lo hai disattivato intanto? (attiva un altro driver dal menu)
Da quello che ho letto nello script di disinstallazione (se é reso utile comunque) é possibile passare il paramentro --dryrun che serve per simulare la disinstallazione. Provalo. Dopo di questo mi viene in mente solo di forzarla, ma aspetterei.

1)attivare un altro driver dal menu "driver aggiutivi (possibilmente quello suggerito)
2) rifare la disistallazione (il comando che hai dato prima) con l'opzione --dryrun (posta quello che esce)

todo list:
1)attivare un altro driver dal menu "driver aggiutivi (possibilmente quello suggerito)
2) rifare la disistallazione (il comando che hai dato prima) con l'opzione --dryrun (posta quello che esce)
ho provato ad attivare il driver dal menu "driver aggiuntivi" ma mi è uscito questo: SystemError: installArchives() failed
