Compiz non parte [Ubuntu 7.10]

ciao a tutti
non riesco a fare andare compiz
nella finestra sistema->preferenze->aspettp->visual effects posso spuntare tutte le voci tranne che custom
(se clicco su custom, e poi chiudo, rimane selezionata la scelta precendente, ad esempio Extra)
a cosa è dovuto questo problema?
io ho installato installato un po' di giorni fa, seguendo la guida nel wiki, tutti i pacchetti compiz e glx (su ubuntu 7.04), e compiz andava alla perfezione
oggi ho fatto l'upgrade automatico alla 7.10, e compiz già non funzionava....
posto il mio /etc/X11/xorg.conf
