Aggiornamenti possibili grazie a modifica dei repository

Salve a tutti.
Sul mio eeepc, a cui non accedevo da tempo, ho visto che erano necessari alcuni aggiornamenti di sicurezza, inclusi quello per il kernel linux (in totale erano circa 200). Vado ad effettuare il download, ma molti di questi non vengono scaricati, l'errore è quello classico di un file non trovato, errore 404. Ho poi modificato il file /etc/apt/sources.list ed ho tolto il # alle righe del multiverse ed universe, ed ho poi riprovato il download degli aggiornamenti, questa volta con successo.
Perchè è accaduto ciò? Grazie.

Perchè l'hai detta tu la risposta, hai decomentato i repo.
In quel modo, col # davanti, è come non ci fossero.

Si, questo mi è chiaro; ma perchè prima di decommentarli non riusciva ad aggiornare, restituendomi l'errore 404?
