Veramente gli effetti di compton e la grafica di kvantum non appesantiscono per niente.

La differenza principale tra le qt e le gtk3 è che le qt sono universali per molte piattaforme, per questo molti sviluppatori preferiscono buttarsi su questi (a tempo pieno pagato) mentre le gtk dipenderanno sempre di più da volontari, vedi grafico qui:

Nessuno porta app da gtk a qt ma in direzione opposto sì: vlc,dropbbox e altri e pure unity8 userà le qt se non sbaglio.

So poco di wayland, una cosa che non sarà compatibile sarebbe il vassoio, LXQt ne usa già di due tipi, statusnotifier e systray.
