E' la prima volta che mi capita un problema simile. E di distribuzioni ne ho installate moltissime. Di solito per ovviare al problema di Ubuntu che non legge i DVD mi bastava installare alcuni pacchetti (Libdvdcss2, libdvdnav, libdvdread, w32codecs non-free-codecs ecc..) o il pacchetto ubuntur rescricted extra e tutto andava a posto.. Invece stavolta no. Ho provato di tutto. A reinstallarli tutti ma non c'è verso. Sempre lo stesso messaggio:
Error: Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed.

Ho provato ad installare la stessa distribuzione creata con remastersys su un'altro notebook che ha caratteristiche simili. Entrambi hanno scheda nvidia 520m optimus e incredibile.. Su quest'ultimo funziona tutto perfettamente appena finita l'installazione.. Può essere qualcosa legato all'hardware?

anch'io ho le stesso problema: ho provato anche a installare la nuova versione 12.10, ma i problemi con vlc e totem restano (stesso messaggio in totem e vlc che non si apre).
Qualcuno può darci qualche consiglio?

Avete controllato il regionset di quei dvd e del vostro lettore? Do per scontato che abbiate installato tutti i codec suggeriti nel nostro wiki, alla voce "Formati proprietari".

Per quel che riguarda il lettore del notebook del mio amico probabilmente era un problema del lettore stesso perchè mi sono accorto che non funzionava neanche su windows. I codec c'erano tutti. Ma niente da fare. Legge tutto ad esclusione dei dvd originali.

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
poi andrebbe verificato con un lettore esterno se con quello funge
