ho scaricato gli ultimi driver per nvidia, ed ecco il primo problema:
faccio
sudo -s poi metto la pw e poi sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8178-pkg2.run
dopo pochi secondi appare questa schermata
  ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before

        the NVIDIA Driver" in the README available on the Linux driver
        download page at www.nvidia.com.

dove sbaglio?

Devi uscire dall'ambiente grafico
Premi ctrl+alt+F1 
poi scrivi sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
e poi puoi dare
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8178-pkg2.run
