ho risolto così: ho disinstallato il plugin di totem per firefox ed ho installato mplayer-firefox

Abilita i repository Universe e Multiverse, poi vai su Synaptic o Aggiungi/Rimuovi (Ubuntu Software Center se hai la 9.10) e cerca Ubuntu-restricted-extras...

Bene.. allora per iniziare accertati di aver abilitato i repository Universe e Multiverse... (lo fai andando in Sistema-Amministrazione-Sorgenti software)

si sono abilitati ma quando cerco il pacchetto non me lo trova

Vai in Aggiungi/Rimuovi e cerca nella casella di ricerca "Ubuntu restricted extras"... dovrebbe comparirti... lo selezioni e dai ok...
