Problema avvio gnome al login

Ciao a tutti, da quando ho installato ubuntu 9.10 sto avendo un problema ostinato all'avvio. Più precisamente una volta fatto il boot di ubuntu con grub2, sembra come se si stesse per avviare la sessione gnome e invece mi ritorna alla schermata di login e anche dopo diversi tentativi non c'è verso che si avvii la sessione di gnome. Questo fatto non accade proprio sempre, ma diciamo che avviene in modo aleatorio, senza regolarità, a volte dopo uno-due riavvii del pc entra a primo colpo (altrimenti non entra affatto).
Ho fatto questo tentativo, dalla schermata di login ho aperto una console con ctrl+alt+F1, ho dato

sudo stop gdm
e successivamente

startx
e si è avviato il desktop di gnome senza problemi.
Sapete indicarmi in quali log di sistema posso guardare (ed eventualmente ve lo posto) per rilevare dov'è questo problema relativo all'avvio della sessione?

Nella home, dentro il tuo account, c'è un file nascosto che si chiama .xsession-errors, in quel file trovi gli eventuali errori riscontrati durante un tentativo di avvio.
Quando ti trovi in quei casi in cui l'avvio parte male, entra in terminale con crtl+alt+F2 e copia quel file in un posto che ti fa comodo, non sono sicuro ma credo che ad ogni avvio venga riscritto, quindi se poi avvii di nuovo e va bene, perde le info che ti servivano.

Per copiarlo logga e digita:

Ciao ragazzi! Mi è capitata una vera sventura con Ubuntu, non so per quale motivo, non mi si vede più la modalità testo nè quando apro la sessione recovery nè quando cerco di passare a terminale con ctrl+alt+F2 al login.. nel senso che passa in modalità testo ma il monitor è illegibile! si vedono solo delle bande strane come se la frequenza o la risoluzione si fosse sballata.. che cavolo posso fare.. tutte a me devono capitare, nemmeno la sessione di gnome parte al login ovviamente. C'è un modo per resettare tutta la parte relativa alla grafica?

Ci sono un sacco di errori, warning e critical che basterebbe la metà. Al posto tuo avevo rinstallato tutto da un pezzo.  (rotfl)
Personalmente soppeso di volta in volta quanta fatica mi costa "sistemare" rispetto a quella che spenderei a "reinstallare".

Ma hai aggiornato a ubuntu 9.1 o installato pulita?

installazione pulita, il problema l'ho avuto fin da subito, da quando ho cambiato la risoluzione nativa dello schermo perché era troppo elevata per il mio monitor, credo che non ci sia piena compatibilità fra i driver openchrome e la mia scheda via-s3-unichrome.. aspetterò il rilascio della 10.4, nel frattempo posso solo continuare a smanettare nel tempo libero..  >:(

Non sapevo avessi quel tipo di scheda, ormai do per scontato che siano ati o nvidia, potresti provare a scaricare i driver aggiornati dal sito del produttore (ci sono anche per linux, visto ora) oppure se hai già i più recenti, segnalargli il problema.
Se è un problema di driver, da sistema puoi farci poco e niente.  :-\

aspetta, ma tu intendi che sul sito della via-s3 ci sono i driver specifici per linux? Sei sicuro che non siano gli Openchrome?

Salve a tutti, anche io ho riscontrato lo stesso ed identico problema che mi si presenta alla schermata di avvio!!!  :o

Premetto che ho installato una Xubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) - desktop manager Xfce ed avendo come scheda video una Nvidia geForce 5600.

Quando ho installato la distribuzione non ho riscontrato nessun problema (non avevo installato nessun driver proprietario!!)

Quando ho deciso di installare i driver per Nvidia, utilizzando:

Applicazioni>Sistema>Driver Hardware

sia installando il driver Nvidia versione 173 (raccomandato) che il 96, ho notato che alla schermata di avvio, dopo aver inserito l'user e pass, non mi permette di avviare il desktop manager, riportandomi continuamente alla schermata di login, devo presumere che i driver Nvidia installati mandino in crash il serverx, in quanto rimuovendo tali driver da

Applicazioni>Sistema>Driver Hardware

non ho più nessun problema.
