quando tento di cambiare gli effetti desktop mi dice : The Composite extension is not available.Premetto che per far  la scheda video ho dovuto installare i driver propietari della ati(ho radeon x700 3D) e o anche gia attivato l'accelerazione 3D

controlla nel tuo xorg.con di avere le seguenti righe in grassetto:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf #se hai ubuntu
sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf #se hai kubuntu

Per ora limitati a commentare le ultime tre righe, salva e vedi se funziona.

in pratica modifica le ultime tre righe così

no mi dice sempre  The Composite extension is not available e non me li fa mettere.ora devo ripristinare xorg.conf come era prima?  cioe le ultime tre righe  gli ritolgo il commento?

In realtà quelle tre righe le potresti cancellare.

L'estensione composite è essenziale al funzionamento di compiz,
in gutsy di default è attiva,
se tu le metti lo disattivi quindi sicuramente compiz non ti partirà.

Prova a togliere il commento e a sostituire allo "0" un "1".

stessa cos sia che tolgo il commento a tutte le 3 righe sia se lo tolgo sollo alla pen'ultima e metto'1' al posto di '0' .ma per rendere effettive le modifiche devo riavviare il sistema?

no,
togli il commento a tutte e te le righe
e cambia lo 0 in 1,
per rendere effettive le modifiche dovrebbe essere sufficiente
riavviare il server x con control+alt+backspace.
se anche così non dovesse funzionare prova a cambiare "1" in "Enable"
