ho da 1 giorno installato i nuovi driver ati con la fantastica guida di FregTux http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/viewtopic.php?t=155477 presente su questo forum...
beh li ho installati.. e.. MAGIA!! il dual monitor funziona.... e Fantastico!! ho potuto togliere quel chiodo di xgl!!! (io partivo da una ubuntu gutsy con driver installati con il restricted driver manager di ubuntu)

tutto funziona.. i compiz funzionano... etc... o meglio pensavo che fosse tutto così! e invece lo screensaver mi scatta terribilmente (flurry).. o meglio.. più che scattare.. presenta una grossa quantità di frame neri invece della continua morbida linea colorata.
in più totem non mi legge più il video dei filmati video!! °_° riesco solo a sentire l'audio (su vlc ho dovuto fare una modifica dell'output video :P )
firefox continua a dare problemi con lo scroll ;P ma oramai ci ho fatto il callo.. e peggio di tutto.. l'intero sistema sembra anzi è rallentato!!
anche solo allargare una finestra a tutto schermo risulta più pesante..
sia sul carico del sistema (anche se la ram usata è minore di quanto facesse xgl)
sia come effetto grafico.. è "scattoso".. e questo mi uccide >:( !! :°°°

avete qualche idea o consiglio?! vi ringrazio infinitamente!!!

Hai provato a disabilitare Compiz Fusion? Io sapevo che dava molti problemi, tra cui alcuni da te citati. Magari mi sbaglio ma attualmente non credo che il supporto dei driver Ati a Compiz si possa dire del tutto ottimale.
P.S. Anche io ho una Ati e francamente anche se tutto va meglio di prima con i nuovi driver evito di attivare Compiz. >:(

che senso ha togliere i compiz se il mio problema è proprio che voglio avere i compiz senza avere xgl e permettendo dunque il direct rendering?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

e poi è assurdo che con i driver fglrx e xgl- installato.. la "scioglievolezza" del sistema operativo sia maggiore di quando ci metto i driver originali proprietari ati e toglo xgl (che si mangia 60 mega di ram!!)

cmq alla fine ho reinstallato i driver offerti dalla comunità.. gli open ati o mesa.. insomma non so bene come si chiamino.. tutto sembra andare ok.. tranne il flurry che si blocca appena parte ;P ma aprirò un altro post in proposito
