[Desktop] RAM usata per niente???

In questo preciso momento ho 1 sola scheda di firefox aperta ed un terminale, giudicate voi se i consumi di ram che sotto vi riporto sono normali:

Ho provato a disabilitare le applet di controllo cpu, monitor di sistema e deskbar ma non è cambiato assolutamente nulla.
La cosa strama che ho notato è che man mano che la RAM risulta passare dallo stato free a cached, il sistema "pare rallentare" e la RAM non viene poi più rimessa in stato free.
Qualche idea su come risolvere il problema (se è un problema).
C'è un modo per rilasciare nuovamente la RAM per fare in modo che ritorni free?

in un terminale e posta il risultato.

Un'altra cosa: incolla le scritte del terminale nei tag "code" che appaiono cliccando sul cancelletto sopra le faccine.

Viene come nel tuo post di prima, che ho modificato, così è molto più leggibile  ;)

OK per i code, scusami.
Per l'occupazione RAM attualmente la cosa non si sta presentando perchè ho riavviato il portatile ma nel giro di poche ore dovrebbe tornare tutto come prima visto che l'occupazione della free ram ed il suo utilizzo come cache aumenta al passare de tempo.
Appena ho news ti informo.

Ci risiamo.
In un primo momeno il consumo RAM era nella media (diciamo).
Ho guardato un film e siamo passati da 600 MB used a quasi 2 GB!!! Ho chiuso il film (che pesava 700 MB) ma le risorse RAM non sono state liberate.
Oltre al ps fax che mi hai chiesto ti tiallego anche il top ed un free -m.

Per risolvere il problema mi tocca riavviare il portatile cosa che però non posso fare quando sono in ufficio. Al lavoro cose di questo genere mi succedono con 2 finestre gedit e 3 putty aperti quindi non ritengo il problema sia relativo al film piuttosto che ad un particolare software.
Dimenticavo, le finestre attuamente aperte sono:
1. una scheda firefox;
2. un terminale;
Attualmente non ho installato compiz/xgl etc...
Non capisco che cosa stia succedendo al mio portatile che, tra le altre cose, ho appena comprato.

Che cosa può centrare il HDD esterno che, appena smontato ha fatto sì che la RAM passasse da quanto riportato nel post precedente a

Preciso che quando mi è successo in passato di avere elevati consumi di RAM non sempre avevo un HDD esterno collegato, anzi.
La cosa mi lascia comunque perplesso.

La memoria realmente utilizzata è la differenza tra il totale riportato (1963 nel primo esempio) e il valore di buffers/cache (1744 nel primo esempio). Quei 1744 mega sono occupati dalla pagecache, uno strumento gestito a livello kernel che tiene in memoria parti di file onde evitare la lettura diretta da disco fisso, operazione molto più lenta dell'accesso diretto alla RAM. Le varie pagine vengono scartate periodicamente se obsolete o se devono essere rimpiazzate da dati più freschi, in ogni modo puoi sempre fare pulizia usando il comando

ma tieni presente che verrà riempita nuovamente nel giro di poche decine di minuti, è una cosa normalissima.
