Avevo già provato appena aggiornato a hardy a installarli con envyng ma niente...ho provato ancora ma il risultato è lo stesso: mi peggiora la risoluzione massima del monitor e non mi funzionano cmq gli effetti grafici; e ovviamente direct rendering disattivato.
A te cosa funziona di preciso?

Però sono contentissimo perchè sono appena riuscito a risolvere con i driver open!!!  ;D ;D ;D
Se può servire a qualcuno ho semplicemente seguito la guida del wiki per i driver open, aggiungendo al mio xorg.conf (che avevo già modificato per aumentare le risoluzioni disponibili) le varie righe.
Questo è il mio xorg.conf attuale e mi funziona tutto.

Con la 7.10 potevi farli rilevare in automatico riconfigurando xorg (nella sezione video); non so come si possa fare con la 8.04, però credo potresti farcela con un cd live della 7.10 e dando

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Fai tutta la procedura guidata, impostando anche le risoluzioni video massime che vuoi e magari aggiungendo già le righe per abilitare il direct rendering, ecc... (come da wiki: http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/Hardware/Video/Ati/RadeonDriver; poi copi lo xorg.conf risultante da qualche parte. Poi puoi sostituirlo a quello della 8.04 e vedere cosa succede...

Mi raccomando, poi riavvia il computer; io le prime volte dopo aver cambiato xorg.conf (mettendolo praticamente com'è adesso) non ottenevo risultati credo perchè riavviavo solo gnome (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE).

attenzione fatevi sempre una copia di backup...non è così immediato e senza dolore cambiare lo Xorg!!!!
