Ciao a tutti, è da parecchio tempo che tento, senza riuscirci, di utilizzare una qualsiasi distribuzione ubuntu.

Avevo iniziato con Mepis, ma si piantava in continuazione.
Ho poi provato con Ubuntu 6 e non ricordo il motivo per cui lo tolsi, probabilmente lo stesso per cui non riesco ad usare nessuna distro linux.
In seguito avevo installato Ubuntu 7, e già li mi accorsi che crash improvvisi si manifestavano anche durante l'installazione.
Ubuntu 8.04 stessa storia, Kubuntu 8.04 idem, Linux Mint si pianta ancora prima di avviarsi il Live CD.

I blocchi sono del tutto casuali, o almeno credo. A volte mi si blocca in momenti critici, aggiornamenti/installazioni provocandomi non pochi problemi, altre volte quando non sto facendo nulla, altre quando sto guardando un'immagine o un video. Mi è anche capitato mentre stavo partizionando da live cd prima dell'installazione, mandandomi a "quel paese"(per non dire altro  (good)) la partizione Windows e tutto quello che c'era dentro. (rotfl)

Nel momento del blocco non posso fare nulla, i LED della tastiera rimangono fissi (quindi se ad esempio io premessi BlocNum non si spegnerebbe il LED relativo) o lampeggianti (in questo caso solo gli ultimi due). Il puntatore o sparisce o rimane comunque bloccato da qualche parte del desktop. Posso solo riavviare.

Il computer suppongo sia un pre-fabbricato, me lo hanno rifilato come muletto i miei parenti, in quanto inutilizzato.
In questo momento non ho il tempo di postare le specifiche hardware ma tenterò di farlo stasera. Grazie in anticipo per il vostro aiuto e spero di poter utilizzare a breve questo fantastico sistema operativo  :).

Questo pc funziona con altri sistemi operativi? Ad esempio windows?
A me sinceramente sembrano i sintomi di una cpu che stà per andarsene (come la mia che da gli stessi problemi  ;D) . Eventualmente potresti provare ad avviare un memtest da live cd, giusto per escludere che non sia la ram ad essere danneggiata.
Periferiche funzionanti: Webcam: Trust WP-1200p, Stampanti: HP-LJP1006, Mp3: Samsung YP-U3J, Sony NWZ-B142F // non supportano ufficialmente gnu/linux, preferire sempre prodotti con supporto ufficiale.

Con windows XP normale ed SP1 si riavviava al posto di bloccarsi. Mentre con l'SP2 va divinamente (per quanto possa andare divinamente windows  :P).
Proverò con un memtest. Grazie, e vi farò sapere.

Ok ho fatto qualche prova. Per prima cosa ho provato a togliere il lettore floppy (oltre a non funzionare correttametne, lo trovo del tutto inutile e qualcuno mi aveva detto in passato che potesse dare fastidio in certi casi...). Ho formattato in Xubuntu e per un primo momento sembrava non esserci alcun problema, installazione andata in porto senza intoppi. Mi è poi crashato mentre stavo facendo tutti gli aggiornamenti ( mai in un momento più tranquillo  (rotfl) ) e navigavo allo stesso momento. Al riavvio ho abilitato la visualizzazione nel pannello inferiore dell'utilizzo CPU, RAM e SWAP. Ho potuto notare una cosa, probabilmente sarà solo una coincidenza, ma nei due crash seguenti la barra di swap segnava sempre un 15% all'incirca. E' possibile disabilitarlo per provare?

EDIT:  ho notato ora che il secondo HD da 200GB non ha jumper(al contrario del Master), non ho mai avuto problemi con windows, ma in linux può influire?

Sembra un problema di driver ATI, prova ad usare per un po' i driver aperti "vesa" o "radeon", se non si blocca più è quello, ed è un partenza.

Grazie infinitamente, ho effettivamente una scheda video ATI Radeon 5500 su questo pc. Proverò ad utilizzare i driver che mi hai consigliato (sono tornato a Kubuntu) sperando di poter risolvere. ^^

Ok, mi sono limitato a non abilitare i driver proprietari ATI ed i crash sembrano essere diminuiti. Il problema però è che nell'ultimo crash mi è toccato riavviare 3 volte perchè continuava a bloccarsi sulla barra di caricamento. C'è altro che dovrei fare, come togliere in qualche modo del tutto i driver? Ho anche qualche dubbio sui driver Vesa, nello specifico non so esattamente dove abilitarli (se non lo sono già) ma per questo vedrò di fare una ricerca sul forum.

Se il problema sono i drivers ATI puoi provare a riconfigurare X usando i driver open (prova i vesa) col comando

Allora, ho fatto un altro po' di prove...si blocca anche con i VESA (ho modificato xorg.conf a mano, aggiungendo "Driver "vesa"" sotto a "Configured Video ...")...

Ho letto che per mettere gli Open bisogna scrivere "radeon" al posto di vesa, giusto?
Do' una rapida controllata se sono installati e provo... (b2b)

Grazie, ma lo avevo già trovato poco dopo ^^ ;D. Anche con le impostazioni suggerite continua a crashare, più spesso con Compiz attivo e di meno quando è disattivato...
