blocco pc al login

Salve, ho un AMD 64 con scheda video ATI e non riesco a far partire il sistema se non in modalità recovery. In modalità normale, infatti, il computer si blocca completamente al momento del login, ho provato ad installare i driver ATI seguendo il wiki ma non c'è stato nessun risultato positivo...come si può fare?

Cioè il pc funziona solo in modalità testuale e ti si inchioda il server x?
Prova a controllare il log di xorg /var/log/Xorg.0.log e vedi cosa ti dice
Io credo nelle persone, però non nella maggioranza delle persone.
Mi sa che, anche in una società più decente di questa, mi troverò sempre a mio agio e d'accordo con una minoranza

No, una volta che il pc si inchioda al login non c'è modo di tornare alla modalità testuale, la tastiera non funziona quindi non posso neanche fare ctrl alt F2. Il pc si avvia solo se scelgo la modalità recovery al boot

e alora vai in modalità recovery e cerce d vedere che errori ti da con un dmesg e poi controlla i vari log
Io credo nelle persone, però non nella maggioranza delle persone.
Mi sa che, anche in una società più decente di questa, mi troverò sempre a mio agio e d'accordo con una minoranza

Boh qua sembrerebbe a posto.
Ma se  vai avanti con Ctrl-D funzia o si inchioda?
Se nn si inchioda prova a dare /etc/init.d/gdm force-reload
Se si inchioada prova a guardare il log di xorg
Io credo nelle persone, però non nella maggioranza delle persone.
Mi sa che, anche in una società più decente di questa, mi troverò sempre a mio agio e d'accordo con una minoranza

Sono riuscito a premere ctrl+alt+f2 prima che si bloccasse tutto e a quanto pare se faccio il login da riga di comando e poi faccio partire X tutto funziona regolarmente! Logicamente questa procedura èscomodissima, come faccio?

Allora forse il problema potrebbe essere gdm prova a disinstallarlo e reinstallarlo

sudo /etc/init.d /gdm stop
sudo apt-get --purge remove gdm
sudo apt-get install gdm
okkio però siccome ti vuol rimuover anche ubuntu-desktop dopo reinstallalo

oppure prova un bel
sudo /etc/init.d /gdm stop
dpkg-reconfigure gdm
sudo /etc/init.d /gdm force-reload

se vuoi solo vedere cosa fa apt-senza toccare nulla metti in coda ad ogni comando --dry-run
così puoi vedere se andresti incontro a problemi.

Altra cosa che proverei è questa:

sudo /etc/init.d /gdm stop
sudo cp -av /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo /etc/init.d /gdm force-reload

Se proprio nn va in alcun modo edita xorg.conf e sostitusci i driver ati con vesa... così l'xorg dovrebbe funzionare
di più nin zo.

Niente da fare!!! Grazie lo stesso penso che l'unica cosa che posso fare è provare ad avviare con una scheda video nvidia (se qualche amico me la presta) e vedere se è il caso di cambiarla
Al momento l'unica distribuzione funzionante su quel pc è Mandriva però non mi ci trovo bene come con Ubuntu
