Non ci sarà qualche processo che si mangia tutte le risorse? O Qualche periferica che viene usata in modo inadeguato?

Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic-> non penso che sia il kernel perchè l'ho aggiornato da poco e il problema si presentava anche prima

Ho testato con la swap a 1Gb e non ho trovato grosse differenze rispetto alla configurazione con 2Gb.
Il test più significativo è stato quello dove ho giocato con

sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=XX
Ho notato che un valore non estremo come 10% migliora le prestazioni in saturazione.
Penso che il valore ottimale sia 30 e non 10 o 5 come in tanti siti si scrive.
Se metto un valore estreme poi il sistema deve andare di swap per la totalità dei nuovi processi, se invece si tiene un pò di margine,30% appunto, il sistema utilizza cmq quella percentuale di ram libera in parallelo alla swap e il sistema è parecchio più reattivo.
Chiaramente in questo modo si inizia a swappare un po prima, ma mi sembra che il gioco valga la candela.

Cosa ne pensate, può aver senso quello che scrivo?

E poi perchè da anni tutti dicono che sia necessaria una quantità di swap uguale o doppia rispetto alla quantità di ram quando è palese che sulle grosse dimensioni non ha assolutamente senso.

Alcuni modelli con il tuo controller hanno il disco che freeza....
La swap va bene, è tutto ok. Secondo me il problema è ancora da trovare.
La swap leggermente superiore alla ram serve per ibernare, altrimenti con i sistemi moderni potresti anche evitare di farla.

Questo ciclo che si ripete mi sembra un bel problema.

sudo ifconfig eth0 down
e vedi se il sistema ridiventa reattivo. Chiaramente se ti connetti via ethernet resti senza connessione, ma un riavvio rimette tutto a posto.

Che dire, il sistema sembra molto più reattivo dopo il riavvio.
Riesco a lavorare e l'utilizzo della memoria ora è cosi:

Devo ammettere che le due operazioni che mi hanno dato "solievo" notevole sono stato la rimozione del processo assassino e il portare lo swappiness a 30 anziché 10.

Che dire, ringrazio tutti quelli che mi hanno aiutato perché da solo non sarei mai arrivato a scavare così a fondo.
Aggiungerei con soddisfazione un buon risolto davanti al topic.
