A questo punto, io, da "praticone" quale sono, mi lancerei in una sana apertura del case, quindi seguirei il cavetto e guarderei dov'è collegato... poi se ancora non è chiaro, dal layout riportato sul manuale della mobo cercherei di capire esattamente il tipo di connessione. A quel punto sfilerei il lettore dal suo alloggiamento e cercherei qualche etichetta riportante marca e modello... hai visto mai... un po' di c*lo in queste cose non guasta...
Richiuso il tutto e riavviato proverei a spulciare con un po' di pazienza i vari file di log di avvio... sarò ignorante, ma credo che se la porta usb del lettore funziona qualche riga riguardante il suo rilevamento la dovresti trovare e forse ci sarà un messaggio relativo al problema-riconoscimento. Se poi hai trovato (prima) marca e modello una googolata in merito di solito a volte fa miracoli!

Molto simile, quasi uguale l'unica cosa che cambia è la posizione delle scritte per il resto è uguale

Allora ho installato windows a fianco di Ubuntu e il card reader funziona
allora è proprio un problema di Ubuntu... se qualcuno ha qualche idea

nessuno dei comandi da te suggeriti funziona... ah l'altro giorno mentre usavo il gestore dischi per formattare un HD mi erano spuntati 4 dispositivi usb, senza che avessi fatto qualcosa! Quei 4 dispositivi erano le entrate delle schede del lettore!
infatti ho inserito una SD e si è aperta. Poi ho fatto la rimozione sicura e non ha più funzionato

Sono comandi che ho postato ad altri utenti per far funzionare il card reader, a loro ha funzionato; a te no perchè il card reader con Ubuntu una volta funziona e 100 no, quando vedi che funziona, da terminale dai questi comandi:

Allora inserisco la SD e riavvio il PC. Durante la schermata del BIOS e del GRUB la lucetta è accesa e la SD viene riconosciuta. Nello stesso instante quando premo invio per avviare Ubuntu la lucetta si spegne e non viene riconosciuta. Ho provato con winzozz e funziona.
