Problema con Ubuntu in Packard bell

Ciao a tutti... spero possiate aiutarmi perchè l'ultima cosa che vorrei è dover rinunciare a Ubuntu.
Sono riuscita a installarlo... ma ho qualche problema. Ho un notebook della Packard bell , un Easy Note B3600.

1. quando spengo o riavvio ... prima che si visualizzi la schermata con la barra di Ubuntu che scorre... lo schermo mi fa uno strano scherzo... è difficile da spiegare. appaiono striature regolari a bande fatte a quadratini di vari colori.

2. quando clicco su alcuni screen saver mi si pianta tutto e se non riavvio col pulsante di spegnimento non si fa altro.

Ho paura che a lungo andare, specie il problema dello schermo, mi crei altri problemi che poi risultino più gravi e magari vadano ad intaccare qualcosa del pc che poi mi tocca sostituire.

Innanzitutto benvenuta nel forum.
Il tuo sembrerebbe un problema di scheda video. Il tuo portatile è questo?

Ho visto che le S3 sono supportate dai driver Mesa. Probabilmente si tratta solo di abilitare il 3D.
Se riesci a dirci il nome esatto del modello vediamo meglio come aiutarti.

No no, a windows non si torna! (nono)
Allora, vediamo il modello esatto della scheda e i driver che stai utilizzano. Per prima cosa vai in Applicazioni -> Accessori -> Terminale e nella finestra che ti si apre digita il comando:

lspci

(la prima lettera è una elle) e premi invio.

Copia e incolla il risultato nella tua risposta.

Poi digita:

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

e di nuovo copia e incolla il risultato nella risposta. Con queste informazioni possiamo già vedere di combinare qualcosa...

...e pure la X di X11 va maiuscola... (...fai prima a copiare-incollare il comando che ti ho scritto io senza stare a ricopiarlo.)

senti... io ho provato... ma qualsiasi cosa faccia mi da sempre il solito risultato... nessun file o directory...
ho provato con lo spazio dopo gedit/ e ho messo il resto attaccato e con la X maiuscola... ho provato a staccare tutto dopo ogni /.... che devo fare?

ma poi sotto mi viene una finestra con il simbolo del divieto  e scritto

ciao istricetta
pare che tu non abbia l'accelerazione 3D attiva (ecco perché crasha totem). Cercando un po' in rete ho letto che la tua scheda è un po' problematica, specie con i driver che usa di default. Potresti provare a seguire questa guida:
http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/Mesa/Dri
e vedere se la situazione migliora.
Se hai difficoltà posta pure qui.
