I moduli cw sono disponibili anche nei repository di Ubuntu, sono il backport dei moduli di kernel più nuovi.
La scheda funziona senza far nulla, dal kernel 2.6.32, visto che la AR9285 è della serie AR9002 (la più scarsa della serie).
Qualsiasi versione di Ubuntu quindi non richiede interventi per far funzionare la scheda.
Il problema è il tuo portatile, lascia perdere i CW, visto che basta accenderla.

Some people have reported conflicts between the ath9k and acer_wmi drivers, resulting in the wireless card not functioning. Blacklisting acer_wmi seems to resolve the issue.

prova a vedere se funziona così:

Se non parte ath9k prova prima a far partire le dipendenze (con sudo modprobe): ath9k_hw,ath9k_common,mac80211,ath,cfg80211
il tasto dovrebbe cominciare a funzionare (fino al riavvio).
Se no metti direttamente
blacklist acer_wmi
in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf e prova dopo un riavvio.
