Lo scanner HP ScanJet 3800 non funziona

Mi trovo fra le mani uno scanner HP ScanJet 3800 che non ne vuol proprio sapere di funzionare.
Da quello che leggo qui
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.h ... TT-PACKARD
con risoluzioni non superiori a 600dpi dovrebbe funzionare, ma non è così.
A PC acceso, accendo lo scanner e lo collego al PC tramite porta USB, poi avvio xsane 0.999, che riconosce lo scanner.
A questo punto, clicco su [Acquisisci] per avviare la scansione, ma tutto ciò che ottengo è una pagina nera.
Come risolvo?
Per maggiore chiarezza, aggiungo un po' di output.

fipanzer (che non accede al forum da Febbraio 2017) asserisce di utilizzare senza problemi uno scanner Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 3800, ma non scrive cosa ha fatto per configurarlo correttamente.

ma, dopo un inizio promettente, non ha risolto il problema.

Preciso che ho provato anche a lanciare xsane da SuperUser, e che il risultato è stato il medesimo.

Da terminale dai questi comandi:
scorri l'elenco degli scanner, dopo hp aggiungi questo:
salva ed esci dall'editor di testo.
riavvia il pc.
Da terminale postami questo comando:
Prova lo scanner.

xsane, che riconosce lo scanner (lo faceva anche prima).
Avvio l'acquisizione. risultato: una pagina nera.

è possibile scaricare i driver per hp-scanjet-3800 da installare su S.O. Windows® non più recenti di Windows® Vista™, ed io ho Windows® 10™, per il quale, stando a quanto riportato qui

vai in fondo al file; togli il # a queste due righe:
salva ed esci dall'editor di testo.
Riavvia il pc.
