olaGuild Wars should be fairly straightforward to install and play, with there now being relatively few issues for the majority of users. However if you do encounter an issue not listed in the known bugs, please file a bug report.
Guild Wars does not require specific settings for most installations, however for best results you can:
- Use the latest version of Wine (0.9.53 as of this writing)
- Set the Windows version to Windows 98
- Use ALSA for the audio driver, set Hardware Acceleration to Emulation and tick the Driver Emulation checkbox.
- Set VideoMemorySize to the appropriate value for your system
- The defaults for the three winecfg graphics checkboxes should work well, but feel free to experiment and find what works best for you, especially if you have window/resizing issues.
The best way to install Guild Wars is to use the installer.
To start the installation process:
wine GwSetup.exe
To start the game:
WINEDEBUG=-all wine "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"
(Note that this halts reporting of debugging data, which should give a noticeable performance boost. Obviously if you require debugging, do not use this option.)
If you are having graphics issues, use regedit to try some registry keys:
UseGLSL=disabled
DirectDrawRenderer=opengl
OffscreenRenderingMode=pbuffer
RenderTargetLockMode=auto
If you are still having issues, you may want to try some of the following flags:
-dx8 - Uses DirectX 8
-dsound - Uses DirectSound
-nosound - Disables sound
