ti ringrazio per la tua approvazione ma non credo che cambierà molto  (nono)
Per quanto riguarda il server X (7.3) sono state cambiate molte cose..e’ stato introdotto l’autorilevamento e alcuni parametri (driver, risoluzione etc..) sono delegati a programmi in userspace. Si puo’ solo sperare che migliorino il software.
E' quello che accadeva peraltro in altre distribuzioni (es Fedora) dotate di file di config di x ridotti all'osso  (bad)

Quindi se l'autorilevamento (nel mio caso una banalissima GeForce 7600 ed un monitor 17' lcd) non funziona la vedo dura 

poi ognuno è libero di fare come meglio crede

Non devi usare la live della 8.04 che ovviamente si comporta nelle stesso modo ma utilizzare, come detto nel post precedente, una release più vecchia tipo la 7.04 che permette le operazioni che ti ho elencato.

È quel file che va a leggere se xorg.conf dà errore.

Ora, dopo la sostituzione, mi da sempre lo stesso problema in più all'avvio mi dice che parte in modalità grafica "ridotta" e il xorg.conf è:

Sostituito con quello che mi hai dato ma quando lo faccio ripartire mi segnala che sta in "MODALITA' GRAFICA MINIMA" e mi chiede di configurare o continuare.
Se modifico mi viene il xorg.conf come postato sopra, altrimenti se continuo mi torna 800x600.

se non va 8

Ho provato a sostituire24 con 16 ma niente.
Ora ho provato ad installare il driver

e l'aggiornamento
