una cosa io avevo installato NVIDIA X SErver Settings perchè il mio pc non si poteva regolare altrimenti la luminosità dello schermo...

contanto che sono poco esperto e molta paura di fare qualche cazzata, mi hanno consigliato di installarli con Envy pensi che sia una buona alternativa a quello che mi ha linkato tu?

Io ho provato envyng appena installato hardy e mi ha messo i 169.12, gli stessi dei repository, ora non so se mette driver più nuovi, ma io ho preferito formattare e installare manualmente, piuttosto che tenermi tutto il macello che ha fatto envy sul mio pc.

ho installato seguendo al tua guida, l-installazione e andata a buon fine ma il problema RIMANE...
ASSURDO...continuano a rimanere quando guardo i film delle righe orizzontali sia con vlc che con totem...
e quando muovo le finestre non si muovono fluidamente ma gli ancoli vengono caricati a scatti...
che posso fare?

assicurati che non ci sia "dri"
alla section "screen" puoi aggiungere queste opzioni:
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
alla fine del file puoi aggiungere questo:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"

Se con gli ultimissimi driver e questi accorgimenti in xorg.conf hai ancora gli stessi identici problome non so che cosa dirti.
Puoi andare nella cartella home e rimuovere .vlc e le due cartelle relative a totem che non ricordo dove si trovino, per vedere se all'apertura successiva si risolve.
I driver i loro problemi soprattutto sui portatili li creano, forse di più di quelli ati, ma se con gli ultimissimi non hai risolto, e il problema è sempre uguale non so che dire.

Se installi i driver manualmente devi solo aggiungere driver nvidia e load glx.
Per passare ai driver nuovi fai così:
sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-new-envy da terminale mi raccomando.
xorg.conf non lo toccare per carità.
Lo dovresti avere già configurato.
Cmq cosa buona e giusta gli errori si vedono in /var/log/xorg.o.log
posta questo file che ci si guarda.

un problema prima aver installato i driver mi ha cambiato l-impostazione della tastiera... come fare per sistemarla?

non ho modificato l-xorg e ho eseguito da terminale il passaggio ai nuovi driver ma il risultato e lo stesso scatti nello spostamento delle finestre...
a questo punto penso ci sia un errore di configurazione o no?
vi prego pero di dirmi come si fa a cambiare la modalita della tastiera penso che me labbia messa americana non corrisponde piu nulla...e difficoltoso scrivere

1 non penso sia un problema hardware nel senso che abbia un difetto la scheda,perche con win va
2 non e il lettore con cui vedo i film ne ho provati molto poi lo fa sia con le foto filmati di youtube e nel muovere le finestre
3 compitz e effetti 3d vanno se abilitati...
4 dovrei essere passato a questi nuovi driver beta perche al log appare la schermata della nvidia..

per la tastiera è un problema di /etc/X11/xorg.conf. assicurati che la parte della tastiera sia così:
Probabilmente è stato il configuratore della nvidia a cambiare questa sezione.

@mattia77: io ho hardy e quei settaggi vanno bene, se forse dai qualche spiegazione in più vedo di toglierli.
Visto che per ora va tutto liscio, non li tolgo senza sapere il perchè.
Un motivo è il fatto che nvidia-settings mi ha messo quei moduli, l'altro motivo è che sono opzioni nvidia che ho messo dopo attente letture, e che in var/log vengono accettati e ho 0 warning.
nvidia mette sempre la tastiera "us"

quindi se si vuole farla funzionare come si deve, si deve mettere in italiano.

Ma questo succede pure con envy, anzi soprattutto con envy, visto che prende i driver "us", e comunque con qualsiasi settaggio fatto fare automaticamente alle schede nvidia.
Poi vorrei sapere cosa dovrebbe farsene di envy visto che ha già installato i driver del sito nvidia.
Fare riscrivere xorg.conf a nvidia-settings, aprendolo con sudo nvidia-settings sarebbe la stessa cosa di dire a envy di configurare in maniera automatica.
Gli è andata bene che il sistema è partito a primo colpo e deve fare solo qualche modifica a xorg.conf, io quando ho usato envy il sistema non è ripartito, e ho dovuto sistemare xorg.conf per farlo ripartire.
Questo può succedere pure con l'installazione manuale, non mi è successo, ma può succedere.

scusate non mi sono accorto che già qualcuno aveva postato la modifica da fare.
Io ti consiglio di spulciare in /etc/X11 dando crtl+h dovrebbe spuntare qualche file di backup se già non è a vista, controllare cosa avevi e inserire con calma le opzioni di tastiera mouse ecc...
riavvia spesso e volentieri X, così se non parte trovi subito il problema.

se mplayer o vlc danno lo stesso problema ci credo poco che il problema sia in gstreamer.
vlc parte in modalità X11/xv con compiz attivo in modo automatico, senza dirgli nulla.
