[NVidia] problemi con nvidia geforce 4 go420 toshiba notebook e ubuntu 7.10

Salve, ho un problema di installazione degli aggiornamenti o driver della scheda grafica.Vi spiego cosa succede:
Una voltra installato il S.O ( sia il 7.10 che l'8.04 succede in entrambe le versioni) mi compare l'icona di aggiornamento hardware e l'avviso che gli effetti grafici non sono abilitati e per abilitarli dovrei aggiornare. Ok aggiorno e riavvio. Al ripristino vedo la consueta schermata nera con la scritta ubuntu, la sua bella barra di avanzamento e alla fine del caricamento, quando in teoria dovrei effettuare il login, mi appare una schermata nera con al centro un quadrato bianco con i bordi sfumati, arrotondati e delle righe colorate verticali. Ho provato a fare il login e inserire la password (alla cieca!!!), il S.O. parte, perchè sento la "musica" di avvio, ma nn posso fare niente perchè non vedo nulla, quindi mi vedo costretto a spegnere il pc dal pulsante far ripartire Winzoz e con Partition magic cancellare le partizioni Linux eliminando inevitabilmente ubuntu...Spero di essere stato abbastanza chiaro e vi ringrazio anticipatamente per le dritte che mi darete.

PS:Il mio Pc è un Toshiba satellite 2450-101, la scheda grafica è un Nvidia GeForce 4 go 420.

Ciao, un problema abbastanza strano, ma che sicuramente riguarda la scheda video, i drivers installati, li hai installati dagli aggiornamenti o comunque da ubuntu? Che versioni sono? Che kernel usi? Sicuro di non aver toccato qualcosa al gdm? Puoi postare in qualche modo lo xorg.conf? Da console tty(bisogna effettuare l'accesso premendo il combo di tasti CTRL+ALT+F2)fai il login, monta la partizione di Windows e copia quel documento, al riavvio vedi se in qualche modo puoi risistemare il documento e postarlo qui.

Il kernel è il 2.6.24-19 generic, Ho notato che il problema alla schermata si verifica quando si installa nvidia-glx(installato in automatico da ubuntu). Ho trovato qualche soluzione dal tutorial installando i pacchetti nvidia-glx-legacy e nvidia-xconfig dalle repository ufficiali. La risoluzione dello schermo anche se la imposto a 1024x768 al riavvio la massima è 800x600 e nn posso modificarla, poi anche se gli indico quale scheda video ho al ripristino mi dice che ci sono degli aggiornamente hardware da fare che sono sempre della scheda video che se installo mi rimanda tutto in palla... A I U T O!!!

Non appena rientrerò in possesso del portatile proverò ad effettuare il cambiamento.
Una domanda, ma devo copiare il nuovo xorg al posto del vecchio andando a cancellarlo dal terminale, o devo inserirlo in qualche altro modo?

Devi sostituire, cioè, il tuo attuale xorg.conf deve diventare quello che ho postato io Devi semplicemente copiare il mio ed incollarlo sul tuo, sovrascrivi

Niente da fare!!! Ho cancellato il vecchio x.org, sovrascritto il nuovo e salvato le nuove impostazioni. Al riavvio va in schermata minima, non riconosce ne la scheda video ne il monitor e come risoluzione max ho 800x600...  >:(
