pppconfig e composizione del numero

Salve ho da poco installato ubuntu linux sul mio computer. Sono riuscito a configurare la connessione a internet tramite un modem seriale ELSA MICROLINK 56K. Ho notato tuttavia che  all'inizio impiega un tempo relativamente lungo (1 – 2 minuti) per comporre il numero. Se mi disconnetto e mi riconnetto la composizione del numero avviene praticamente subito. Invio il file di log per maggior chiarezza (io non ci capisco niente):
