Credo di di essere arrivato a un punto morto quindi provo a chiedere qui.
1. Premessa.
Due giorni fa ho sostituito la mia Ati Radeon Sapphire HD 2600, DDR2, con una Ati Radeon Sapphire HD 3850, DDR3 (entrambe AGP).
Sul mio PC ho più di un sistema operativo, anche per fronteggiare casi di emergenza e fare piccoli esperimenti, tra i quali Ubuntu 8.04.2 e 8.10. Entrambi avevano i driver ATI proprietari per la precedente scheda video.
- Con 8.10 non ho avuto alcun problema. All'avvio di Gnome un'applet col marchio AMD mi ha avvisato che il driver stesso andava sostituito e io l'ho reinstallato con la procedura manuale descritta nel wiki non ufficiale ATI, come sempre. Tutto OK.
- Con Ubuntu 8.04.2 invece guai: ho schermo nero e quasi mai la possibilità di accedere alla riga di comado. Per riavere la modalità grafica minima devo ogni volta entrare nella 8.10, aprire la partizione con 8.04.2, cambiare i permessi e sostituire /etc/X11/xorg.conf con un vecchio file di backup.
L'unica differenza tra le due installazioni è che nella 8.04.2 avevo disabilitato l'uso di driver proprietari prima di montare la scheda nuova. Comunque in seguito l'ho riabilitato.
Ovviamente scrivo perché a me serve la 8.04.2 e l'evdev 1:2.0.8-1, vers. lenny, che è il solo a far funzionare il mio mouse G5 correttamente, quindi il consiglio di passare alla 8.10 non vale : )
Ecco i vari tentativi che ho fatto, ottenendo sempre il risultato di uno schermo nero:
1. Installazione manuale dei driver proprietari, come ho sempre fatto. La guida di riferimento che uso è quella del wiki non ufficiale ATI: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide
2. Installazione di precedenti versioni dei driver proprietari (fino a 8.11 se non ricordo male).

3. Installazione dei driver tramite EnvyNG (prima volta che lo usavo, ma diceva che tutto era andato a buon fine).
4. Lasciar far fare ad Ubuntu per vedere come si arrangia a cercarsi un driver, anche open.
5. Aggiornamento del kernel e dei vari pacchetti con le versioni "Hardy proposed" alla versione 2.6.24-24 generic (che non è una bella cosa da fare su una LTS : (
Nulla da fare: Schermo nero.
Se sostituisco xorg.conf con un vecchio backup (drivers vesa) riesco a riavre lo schermo.
2. Possibili fonti del problema: "(WW) fglrx(0): Failed to open DRM connection" e "(EE) fglrx(0): [FB] Can not get FB MC address range".
Di seguito il log di Xorg.0.log. Ci sono diversi errori. Mi pare di capire che non si apra la connessione DRM. Dovrebbe quindi essere un problema legato al "Direct Rendering Manager" (non sarà mica Digital Rights Management!? Eheh...). Ho verificato e pare che libdrm2 sia installato (se si riferisce a quello).
Ho anche trovato un thread che riporta gli stessi errori DRM, ma sembra causato da un problema che a me non risulta o è sfuggito (pagina 2 di 2): http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/ww-fglrx0-failed-to-open-drm-connection-2.6.27.8-688861/
Comunque non so cosa intenda l'autore quando descrive la sua soluzione:

Compile DRM as a module. I had it built into the kernel.
So kernel 2.6.27.8 is currently running with network and sound functional (which surprises me. I usually have to battle sound).
A questo punto mi sono perso. Come riparare la connessione DRM? O il problema è altrove?

Dopo aver ripulito a fondo i drivers già installati, sto provando a seguire, oltre a quella non ufficiale del wiki ATI, questa guida: http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/viewtopic.php?p=1943375#p1943375
Seguendo la procedura di disinstallazione dei vecchi drivers descritta e mettendo i 9.2 gli errori di cui sopra:

Se poi provo con Catalyst il mio solito setting, 60hz e 1024x768 o anche 60Hz a 800x600, al prossimo riavvio il monitor si spegnerà del tutto.
