Se non ho capito male sembra che tu abbia finito lo spazio su disco... hai provato a vedere si gparted lo spazio che hai libero?

Come vedi hai /boot che è di soli 96 Mb ed è pieno.

Non so come tu abbia configurato le tue cartelle, ma 96 Mb sono un po' pochi.
O cancelli qualcosa da /boot, o allarghi lo spazio.

vedi se c'è qualche kernel da poter eliminare.
Poi da synaptic lo elimini.

Ora da Synaptic, ricerca "linux-image" e disinstalla tutti i pacchetti riferiti a 2.6.24-17 e 2.6.24-19.
Poi da terminale dai

sudo apt-get autoclean

Se Synaptic non si lancia, entra con nautilus e i privilegi di amministratore in /boot e togli tutti i files con "2.6.24-17 e 2.6.24-19", così fai un po' di posto e puoi provare a lanciare di nuovo Synaptic da cui fare la rimozione completa dei pacchetti di cui sopra.

Allora, ho fatto come hai scritto, ma quando ho cercato di togliere via synaptic il 17 e il 19, questi mi ha dato un problema per poi non riavviarsi più restituendomi lo stesso errore:

Prima di tutto controlla di avere il cestino di /root vuoto, lo trovi nella root( non in home)

/.local/share/Trash/files/

se vi fossero diversi files vuotalo da terminale con il comando

sudo rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/files/*

Poi, solo per la certezza, sempre da terminale dai

uname -r

la risposta dovrebbe essere "2.6.24-20-generic".
Se è così, apri Nautilus, sempre con privilegi di amministratore, ed elimina tutti i files presenti, ad eccezione di quelli con numero 2.6.24-20 e 2.6.24-23
Questi files, se non hai attivato in Nautilus il comando "elimina" che scavalca il cestino, ti finiscono nel cestino di root e li dovrai poi eliminare col comando in riga 4.
Infine posta il risultato del comando

df -h

e vediamo se si è liberato dello spazio in /boot per far lavorare il gzip
