...in ogni caso in pratica descrive come X rileva un qualsiasi evento  provocato ad es. dal movimento del mouse o la pressione di un tasto della tastiera.

...secondo me il tuo tasto è rotto.

Per averne la certezza prova a fare così:

ALT + R_Sys + r

R_Sys è il tasto a destra dell' F12

Fatto ciò riavvii xev e digitando la lettera "o" vedi se ottieni dell'output o meno. Se non ottieni nulla vuol dire che probabilmente quel tasto non va. Soprattutto se vedi che premendo altri tasti ottieni invece dell'output.

Prova di nuovo con xev anche prima di fare come indicato sopra. Giusto per essere sicuri che la prima volta avevi fatto bene.

Per averne ulteriore certezza provalo con un altro sistema operativo o una diversa versione di ubuntu.

Dall'output che posti si direbbe che quel tasto non vada.

La domanda era:

premendolo (mentre xev è in esecuzione) viene stampato nulla nel terminale?

L'output corretto (quando premi "o") sarebbe questo:

tuttavia se alla pressione, vedi dell'output comparire nella finestra di terminale da cui hai avviato xev, è possibile che quel tasto funzioni ma sia mappato malamente.

Per sicurezza esegui questo comando prima di avviare xev:

Altra prova che puoi fare è vedere se nella console virtuale (ctrl+alt+f1) funziona o meno.

Se non funziona prova questo comando:

In ogni caso considera che le prove che ti faccio fare te le faccio fare giusto per pignoleria perché anche se la tastiera fosse mappa in una lingua diversa dall'italiano la posizione della "o" mi pare sarebbe la stessa (a meno che non l'hai mappata in arabo ...ma in tal caso sballerebbero anche altre lettere oltre la "o")

Ok ho fatto accesso con l'altro pc.
Grazie per l'aiuto, ma dopo le prove si vede che è proprio un problema di acquisizione dell'input.

é sicuramente un problema di xubuntu, dopo le tante prove e comunque dal fatto che avevo preso una tastiera esterna perchè alcuni tasti erano rotti.
