Salve.
Ho da poco installato per la prima volta sul muletto di casa Ubuntu 11.
Ora, a parte il fatto che per chi viene da Win il passaggio è un pò strano, avrei un problema relativo all'interfaccia Unity.
Nel computer in questione, è installata la scheda di cui all'oggetto con driver 173 che risultano però attivati ma non attualmente in uso.
Mi sono accorto di questo perchè ieri sera, preso dalla curiosità, mi sono installato ubuntu anche nel portatile di casa   :P ed alla fine mi sono trovato un desktop diverso da quello che avevo nel muletto di mia madre.
Ho letto un po in giro e sono arrivato qua:

Ora, mi son letto tutto, ma non rieco a capire se devo tenermi unity 2d o esiste un fix per attivarlo ugualmente 3d.
Non che cambi molto, era solo per iniziare a entrare nel "sistema".

PS: è nella sezione bar che si può intraprendere un discorso di ampio "respiro" per avere chiarimenti generali sul mondo Linux?

Fabio, se non hai esigenze particolari, cioe` non ti servono le prestazioni dei driver nvidia ma ti basta l'accelerazione 3D, al posto dei driver nvidia puoi usare i nouveau con la libreria dri-experimental. Io ho un muletto con scheda simile e ho avuto buoni riscontri (anche se non so dirti come girano su Natty, parlo di un installazione di Sid di qualche mese fa, per provare Gnome3, ma il risultato non dovrebbe differire di molto, le librerie quelle sono...).

Se vuoi provare, disinstalla i driver nvidia e accertati di aver installato i seguenti pacchetti:

Ok grazie.
Esigenze particolari non ne ho, quindi provo con i driver che mi hai detto tu.
Ero veramente di fretta che per postare ho usato un copia incolla brutale

non vedo nessun modulo agp,
natty non l' ho ancora installata, ma sulle altre versioni che ho usato, almeno un modulo agp era sempre presente
(intel_agp, nvidia_agp o agp_gart)
ho in programma di passare a natty (o direttamente a oneiric beta) questo fine settimana

Attenzione la prima volta che ho lanciato il comando l'apertura era 64mb, sono entrato nel bios e l'ho portata a 128.

Non hai disinstallato il driver proprietario di nvidia:

L'agp e` riconosciuto correttamente, giudicando dall'output di dmesg.

Per il log di Xorg, usa un cat per averlo nel terminale:

Oppure spostati con nautilus (il file manager) e aprilo come file di testo (basta un doppio click).

Per usare Unity, la login (gdm) dovresti avere una voce "sessione", scegli Ubuntu per avere Unity.

P.S. Naturalmente, se segui il bug da te segnalato e le cose si risolvono, per tornare ad utilizzare il driver proprietario nvidia ti basterà disinstallare il pacchetto "libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental" e reinstallare quello nvidia.

Ultimo problema: attivando ora ubuntu, nella barra lanciatore, non visualizzo più le icone ma solo i loro nomi.
Si è sistemato l'orologio però, che prima mi troncava l'ultimo numero dei minuti ed ora invece è ok.
Si è anche sistemato la rilevazione del monitor, che prima non veniva correttamente rilevato, ed ora si, con i corretti valori di refresh ma 18 pollici anziché 19.

Fabio, io non uso Unity e percio` faccio un po' fatica a seguirti sul discorso del lanciatore... non so nemmeno se e` un porblema riscontrato da altri, spero che qualcuno possa intervenire al riguardo.

Sulla risoluzione e refresh del monitor, prova a controllare i valori in Preferenze > Monitor, eventualmente fai qualche tentativo cambiando i valori fino a quando non ne trovi di adeguati.

Inoltre, accertati che non siano rimasti residui dell'installazione precedente (anche se dubito):

Qui è tutto ok al vedere.
Sono comunque giunto a questa conclusione:
I migliori driver per la mia scheda non sono quelli nvidia, ma bensì quelli nouveau perché permettono di avere la visualizzazione della scrivania con la barra lanciatore ed individuano il monitor correttamente, anche se 18 pollici e non 19, cosa che non avveniva con i driver proprietari.
Ora vorrei però sapere se esiste un modo per  far ricomparire sulla barra lanciatore anche le icone.
Ho provato a cambiare visualizzazione, da ubuntu a 2d a ubuntu senza effetti, non riesco a risolvere.

Beh, probabilmente i nouveau sono i migliori per l'impossibilità che, a causa del bug, hai riscontrato nell'uso dei proprietari... Se gli nVidia funzionassero, girerebbe tutto meglio... ma tant'è.
Poi, tanto vale abituarsi all'uso dei driver liberi, che tanto il supporto da parte di nVidia, per queste schede datate, è probabile che non durerà ancora a lungo.

Comunque, per il tuo problema di icone, ti consiglio, per una questione di visibilità, di aprire (meglio fare una ricerca prima, che forse trovi la soluzione già bella e pronta) un nuovo 3d in una sezione più appropriata.
