installare un'altra versione di gedit

Salve a tutti,
Ho installato Ubuntu 11.10 e di default mi ha installato una versione (l'ultima) di gedit che non mi piace. Vorrei perciò reinstallare quella che avevo prima. Per cui ho scaricato il pacchetto dal sito.
Vorrei sapere ora qual'è il modo migliore di agire.
Credo che dovrei prima rimuovere quello esistente da  Ubuntu software Center e poi installare l'altro con apt-get?

Solo che devi scaricare gedit dal sito, e non installarlo attraverso apt

Una precisazione per apt-get. Dovrei inserire tutto il pacchetto

Se hai scaricato il pacchetti deb devi installarlo con dpkg, non con apt-get.

Più che altro devi vedere se ci sono incompatibilità con il sistema

E vedi che non funziona questa cosa, devi installare un pacchetto che è nel repository, e quello che c'è ha il nome si "gedit" e si riferisce, a seconda della versione della distro, ad una specifica di gedit.
La 11.10 supporta la 3.2 di gedit, quindi se vuoi installare una versione precedente devi scaricarla del sito di GNOME

Non puoi installare pacchetti scaricati usando APT. Questo tool ti permette di scaricare e installare automaticamente i pacchetti presenti nei repository e quelli supportati dalla comunità.

Se hai scaricato il tar.gz, allora devi solo scompattarlo e seguire le istruzioni di installazione.
Se invece trovi il pacchetto .deb, allora devi fare come detto da vaillant

Casino.
L'ho scompattato ma non posso aprire il file di spiegazione perchè ho disinstallato gedit e non ho applicazioni che mi aprono questi file (nano non lo apre).
Per cui non mi rimane che trovare il pacchetto deb. Sono andato sul sito di gedit ma non lo trovo.

Installation
============

gedit requires GTK+-2.16.x, GtkSourceView 2.4.x and GConf libraries.
PyGobject 2.12.x, PyGtk 2.12.x and PyGtkSourceView 2.4.x are required to
enable python plugins support.

Simple install procedure:

  % gzip -cd gedit-2.30.2.tar.gz | tar xvf - 	# unpack the sources
  % cd gedit-2.30.2				# change to the toplevel directory
  % ./configure					# run the `configure' script
  % make					# build gedit
  [ Become root if necessary ]
  % make install				# install gedit

How to report bugs
