Sparita la shell

Salve, uso Mint 12 (basato su ubuntu 11.10) 32bit, con gnome Shell e l'estensione della dock di webupd8.
In passato (non so perchè) succedeva che scompariva la shell (barra superiore, barra del titolo delle finestre e i loro bordi). Per risolvere bastava dare il comando

gnome-shell --replace

(visto che F2 non funziona non funzionando la shell) e tutto si risolveva temporaneamente visto che la shell si ripristinava ma il terminale restava aperto dando una sorta di errore che non ricordo... Quindi poi riavviavo il PC e tutto tornava normale
Invece da ieri sera, non appena finito un aggiornamento (non ricordo di cosa) la cosa non funziona! infatti mi restituisce

NB: di solito quando accadeva la tastiera non funzionava mai infatti avevo creato un file di testo con il comando replace da incollare nel terminale; l'unica cosa che funziona è la dockbar; in questa situazione non posso spegnere (correttamente)il PC perchè il tasto di spegnimento sarebbe sulla barra sparita, non posso dare ctrl+alt+canc perchè di solito la tastiera non va, e anche se premo il pulsante di accensione non fa nulla anche se invece quando funziona mi compare un menu che mi fa scegliere se voglio spegnere, riavviare, ecc...
Quindi non mi resta che tagliare l'alimentazione!

Ho dato il comando

sudo gnome-shell

e mi ha restituito

Ho dato lo stesso comando nella modalità di ripristino, quindi solo terminale senza interfaccia grafica, e mi diceva impossibile avviare X o una cosa del genere...
Ho lanciato gnome-tweak-tool da terminale e non mi riesce ad aprire la scheda delle estensioni... che sia lì il problema?
Qualche idea?
Come faccio a disabilitare tutte le estensioni della shell da terminale?
