Ubuntu 14.04 mettere MATE al posto di Unity

Salve, lo so esistono molti Tutorial in giro ma sinceramente non nessuno dice come SOSTITUIRE e non aggiungere Mate al Posto di Unity.
Di partire da installazione minimale e installare Mate sarebbe sicuramente la cosa migliore
Ma non credo avere sufficiente esperienza.
Qualsiasi guida o Link o istruzione sarà utile

We are getting a lot of requests for Ubuntu MATE 14.04 .iso images but we won't be in a position to make them until after Ubuntu MATE 14.10 is released. So, as an interim measure here are some instructions for creating your own Ubuntu MATE 14.04 from scratch.

The basic steps are:

    Install Ubuntu from a netboot .iso
    Add the Ubuntu MATE PPAs
    Install the required packages
    Tweak the configuration

Download Ubuntu 14.04 netboot .iso image

Visit the URL below and download either the i386 or amd64 mini.iso.

    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/netboot/14.04/

Burn the .iso to CD or dd it to a USB stick.
UEFI and Wireless! While the `mini.iso` is handy, there are some limitations.

    It can't boot or install UEFI computers that you want to run in UEFI mode because it lacks the required files for booting the computer in UEFI mode. Therefore, if you have a UEFI computer you need to enable "Legacy BIOS Mode".
    If you have a wireless card that requires firmware or a proprietary driver then you will have to connect via ethernet cable to complete the initial installation.

Install a minimal Ubuntu 14.04

Installing from mini.iso is straight forward, here is an overview of what to do.

    When mini.iso boots select Install by pressing ENTER.
    Select your language.
    Select your location.
    Configure your keyboard layout.
    Enter the hostname for the computer.
    Choose a mirror location for the Ubuntu archive.
    Configure the HTTP proxy to use (if required).
    Create your user account.
    Decide if you want your home directory encrypted or not.
    Select your time zone.
    Partition the disk(s).

The base system packages will now be downloaded and installed, this is a good time for a cup of tea. Or, if your Internet connection is like mine, then it is time for a pot of tea while you bake a cake.

    Select your preferred update management policy.
    When the 'Software selection' menu is displayed make sure nothing is selected then choose <Continue>.
    Install the GRUB boot loader.

USB and GRUB Using the netboot .iso from the USB may need special attention.

As Jon notes in the comments, when using mini.iso from a USB stick the installer often sees the USB as /dev/sda and the disk you are installing to as /dev/sdb. This is apparent during the partitioning.

When it's time for the installer to write the bootloader to a drive, it defaults to /dev/sda. Since /dev/sda is the USB stick, bad things will happend. So, select the No option that's offered at that point and manually identify where the bootloader should actually go, very likely /dev/sdb.

    Set the system time to UTC or local time.

The minimal Ubuntu installation is complete, choose <Continue> to reboot.
Configure Ubuntu

Login using the user account you created earlier. A few packages need to be installed so that the Ubuntu MATE PPAs can be added easily.

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties software-properties-common

Add the Ubuntu MATE PPAs

Now add the Ubuntu MATE PPAs.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/trusty-mate
sudo apt-get update

Install Ubuntu MATE

Execute the following to install Ubuntu MATE.

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-mate-core ubuntu-mate-desktop linux-firmware-nonfree

Remember that cake you baked earlier? Now is a good time to eat it.
Post-install configuration

When the install is complete some post-install configuration is required.

During the mini.iso install a user account was created, which is missing a couple of files that make Network Manager work and correct the default icons for LibreOffice. Therefore these Ubuntu MATE configuration files need manually overlaying.

rsync -av /etc/skel/.config/ ~/.config/
rsync -av /etc/skel/.local/ ~/.local/

This last tweak is required to get NetworkManager fully working. Edit /etc/network/interfaces to remove any extra lines so that it looks exactly like this:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Audio and Video Codecs?

If you'd like some additional audio/video codecs and Adobe Flash then install the following package.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-addons

Virtualbox?

If you are doing this in a Virtualbox guest then you'll want to install these additional packages.

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-x11 virtualbox-guest-dkms

All done!

You can now reboot into your shinny new Ubuntu MATE 14.04.

Evidentemente al momento la via per Roma è intasata e forse conviene una deviazione, o aspetti un mesetto che chiudono i cantieri e aprono la viabilità (Ubuntu Mate 14.10).

Tecnicamente si può fare. Installare però un DE e rimuoverne completamente un altro comporta dei rischi con le dipendenze. A tuo rischio e pericolo ti dò due consigli:
1) Installa prima un Login manager alternativo (slim dovrebbe andare bene); stessa cosa per un "DE paracadute": openbox è perfetto (poche dipendenze e si rimuove con facilità). Se qualcosa dovesse andare storto puoi comunque accedere al computer.
2) Dopo aver installato MATE, accedici e elimina i pacchetti di unity tramite Synapic. Fa' attenzione a tutte le dipendenze per non togliere pacchetti importanti!
Se tutto è andato bene puoi eliminare anche Openbox e rimettere LightDM. Così dovresti avere solo Mate.

Come vedi è un po' rischioso e macchinoso, il risultato non è garantito (c'è infatti pure la possibilità che qualche pacchetto che volevi eliminare sei costretto a tenertelo).
Se non vuoi incasinarti il pc, fa un backup di tutto e metti una derivata non ufficiale (Mint, Piuma Linux, Ubuntu 14.04 Mate Classic Plus Remix...)

Non ha nessun senso installare prima ubutnu desktop e poi togliere unity. Anche perchè è ben difficile eliminare le decine di pacchetti inerenti a quel desktop. L'unica cosa da farsi è una installazione minimale e si installa solo mate (nella mia risposta è descritto per filo e per segno quello che bisogna fare, anche se in inglese). Se uno proprio ha "paura" ad installare da minimale può benissimo installarsi piuma linux jynx che è ubuntu con mate come desktop

...sul web di tutorial ne ho anche visti...dedicati a sostituire completamente unity con altro...comunque tutti riguardavano ubuntu12.04...non so adesso se con 14.04 cambi qualcosa...oltretutto come giustamente sottolinea xavier é operazione che comporta rischi....

...la soluzione ottimale ovviamente sarebbe di partire da un´installazione minimale...quel che mi sento di consigliarti..é di provare su dispositivo esterno..ovviamente un hd esterno é preferibile...provi lí...sia la sostituzione totale di unity con mate...che il partire da un´installazione minimale...non corri a quel punto rischi...e puoi anche far pratica...se poi hai successo...puoi anche usare un programma come systemback o remastersys...

Comunque una cosa va detta chiaramente secondo me, se vuoi Ubuntu con Mate la soluzione "probabilmente migliore" è aspettare un mese ed installare Ubuntu Mate 14.10, perchè dalla 14.10 Mate sarà derivata ufficiale di Ubuntu e "forse" sarà tutto più semplice per chi preferisce Ubuntu e Mate.
Anzi potresti anche installare subito la versione beta che forse è già abbastanza stabile:

Sono guide che non ho testato, qundi mi limito solo a segnalarle
Ciò detto, aggiustando i repository come spiegato qui e poi seguendo questa guida qua si dovrebbe ottenere la sostituzione Unity -> Mate.

Da quel poco che ho capito si può anche evitare di mettere repository esterni, dato che in quelli ufficiali ci sono pacchetti di Mate

però sono alla versione 1.6 e inoltre i nomi differiscono da quelli usati nella seconda guida, che quindi sarebbe da riadattare.

Rileggendo un attimo la guida che ho messo, mi pare che non serva proprio a sostituire Mate ad Unity ma mi pare serva solo a sostituire la suite dei vari programmi predefiniti, o qualcosa di simile

non si ha mate ma ubuntu-mate che è un tantino diverso da mate.. linux-firmware-nonfree mi pare sia un pacchetto di debian che non è presente su trusty (ora non posso verificare ma la procedura piu giusta per farlo dovrebbe essere questa https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mate-dev/ ... rusty-mate )
Una volta installata la minimale la prima cosa da fare è installare

se no non puoi aggiungere ppa senza questi due pacchetti..Fatto questo aggiungi i ppa e poi installi il DE

Io sto ubuntu-mate l'ho messo la settimana scorsa,oltre ad avere un grub molto bello ha delle differenze da mate ad esempio il menu che è un normale menu a tendina se vuoi il menu di mate devi aggiungere il relativo ppa e installarlo,io l'ho installato ma non funziona proprio benissimo..E poi ci sono altre cose diverse da mate...
Comunque il sistema è veramente molto buono io lo uso per giocare perche su debian kde non ho abbastanza fps invece su ubuntu-mate disabilitando marco riesco ad avere un sistema velocissimo,bello da vedere e la grafica al massimo senza compositore che aiuta molto in gaming..Mi sono veramente stupito della fluidita e leggerezza di questo DE,lo consiglio a tutti :D :D

non mi ricordo come è ubuntu-mate ma sicuramente è come dici tu perchè in quel modo si installa una versione customizzata di mate.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Thar)

Add Repository

You may add this repo to your apt sources via the following commands:
