(a proposito di Ubuntu 14.04) e ho provato le modifiche suggerite, ma non funziona ugualmente.
Stesso PC, altra partizione con Ubuntu 14.04 ... tutto bene.

sembra incolpare l'hardware, ma stesso PC con Ubuntu 14.04 ... funziona
PC portatile HP250 Ubuntu 16.04 stesso livello manutenzione (oggi) con questo hardware funziona bene.
