ma il pc continua ad avviarsi con risoluzione 800x600 e da Preferenze/Risoluzione dello schermo ci sono solo 800 e 640 ...

come faccio a mettere 1024  >:(

Hai già provato riconfigurando xorg anziché editarlo?

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Ad un certo punto ti chiede di scegliere le risoluzioni. Per farlo devi mettere un asterisco in corrispondenza della risoluzione (basta cliccare sulla barra spaziatrice).
